The present day
This group of mountain-foothill-style cottages, scattered across the slope and now mostly used for recreation, was completed in the valley by multistorey apartment buildings rented to provide accommodation for employees in the industrial plant. In post-war times a residential group of architecturally
austere multistorey panel buildings appeared on the last free plot of land in the valley, followed in recent years by a group of 15 originally commercial buildings on the slope above the railway line. In front of the entrance to the industrial zone the somewhat plain centre of the village is made up of the new multipurpose building housing the culture house and a shop. There are no listed buildings in Jiřetín pod Bukovou. One can find a range of examples of folk architecture in the shape of timbered cottages in the mountain foothills style, which are testament to the architectural development of the area. The land is 76% forest and has a relatively valuable landscape environment with a fair amount of scattered greenery.
Jiřetín pod Bukovou is situated in the Protected Landscape Area of the Jizerské Mountains, making it an ideal starting point for walkers. The entire region of the Jizerské Mountains offers opportunities for sports and hiking all year round. In winter months there are well-prepared ski-slopes and a number of well-maintained cross-country skiing routes.
Spring, summer and autumn bring lots to choose from for lovers of walking, cycling and horse-riding. The routes range from simple walks into the surrounding area through to more demanding day trips, where you can visit the mysterious peat bogs, rock viewpoints, lookout towers, the solitude of the mountains, or the other monuments in the mountains and foothills. The choice is your – just don’t overestimate what you can manage!
In the village itself there is a nice sports complex where one can play tennis, legball, volleyball, and other ball games. A short distance from the village there is a football pitch. Public transport to the surrounding area is provided by Czech Railways on the Smržovka – Josefův Důl line and by bus on the Jablonec n.N. – Josefův Důl or Tanvald – Jiřetín routes.
